We hope you and your family had a fantastic Thanksgiving! Our REAL Leaders were happy to have been a part of two different Thanksgiving volunteer events in our community leading up to the big day. On November 19th a group joined with the Urban League of Palm Beach County to distribute turkeys and boxed meal items to feed over 750 families in the community. MHC also helped raise more than $4,100 to assist in the purchasing of food for that amazing event.
On November 23rd another group of REAL Leaders participated in the Big Heart Brigade and Christ Fellowship Thanksgiving Outreach which prepares and distributes over 75,000 individual meals for needy ones in our community. Our group carved enough turkeys to be included in 900 individually packaged meals.
It’s so rewarding to make an impact in our community, especially during the holidays when so many families are in need. We’re looking forward to our next holiday volunteer event with Adopt-a-Family of the Palm Beaches!
On average, Red Cross helps more people after home fires than all other disasters combined. To combat this threat, Red Cross and its partners have launched an initiative that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in the next 5 years with the Home Fire Campaign. NAI/Merin Hunter Codman’s REAL Leaders took part in this campaign on Friday, June 10th. Over 15 volunteers worked together going door to door in a local community to install over 40 smoke detectors, distribute fire safety information packets and educate families on the importance of having a Home Fire escape plan.
Home Fire Facts:
- Seven times a day, someone dies in a home fire. Every 40 minutes, an injury from a fire is reported
- Nearly 1,000 times every day, fire departments are called to home fires
- Damage from US home fires is bigger than the entire annual sales of many Fortune 500 companies
- Data shows that the 4 percent of homes without smoke alarms represent nearly 40 percent of the home fires, and that working smoke alarms can double someone’s chance of surviving a fire

Our MHC REAL Leaders had a blast on Friday morning at the Urban Youth Impact Dream Center in West Palm Beach. Urban Youth Impact is a faith based non-profit organization that serves at risk children and their families in the West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach and Boynton Beach areas through enrichment programs and job-readiness training. Through it’s core programs, UYI serves nearly 230 youth weekly with educational enrichment and job-readiness training while building lasting relationships. An additional 270 youth are impacted weekly through their collaborations with community partners.
Our group had the pleasure of participating in Summer Jam Camp activities and we had a great time. Our REAL Leaders played ball outside, helped little ones match music notes in piano class, assisted with arts and crafts, organized school supplies for their Back to School event, and even helped with some administrative duties. The children were a blast to work with and you can tell they are in great hands with caring and supportive staff members. Click here to see how you can help and we encourage you to volunteer as well!
